I am Sri Lankan and I love my Sri Lanka.
This is so true for me. Well, my parents knew I read a lot since I was little and they bought me books too. But it was my grandmother (my mother’s mum) that made me addicted to books. She was the one who gave me half a dozen books for my birthday each year. She did this since I was about four years old (she bought me little story books then) till I was about 17. And also, she’d get me a book or two whenever she went to the city. It was her, when I was a kid (of age 10ish) who bought me Shakespeare, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Sinhalese “kavi” and numerous science fiction. And much more!!! She bought me books from both Sinhalese and English. She would ask me later if I read the books and if I like them and she’d buy me more books later. I loved to read the books she gave me, tell her about it and wait to check what books she gives me next. I am forever grateful for her for introducing me to Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, two of my favorite books. Now that I am grown she says I can go to the book store and buy ANY book I want and she now rarely gives me books for my birthdays.
Now my other grandmother (my father’s mum) would give me a book for my birthday, because she knows I am a book addict. But it is different. Usually she takes me to the book store and asks me to choose a book and she’d buy that for me. She doesn’t choose books for me.
So it was my grandmother who first got me into reading. It was her who knew I was a bookworm and appreciated me for it. When I think about it, it was her, who first made me a bookworm. It was her who always listened to me when I talked about books. She isn’t much of a reader herself but it was her who pushed me to read more and more and made the foundation for me to be the book lover I am today!
